My contact information is given on a separate page. I first became interested in workhouses while researching my family history. I discovered that my great-great-grandfather had died in a workhouse and that his death had been registered by the matron. I also became fascinated by the buildings after seeing an old Victorian Ordnance Survey map of the town where I then lived. At the edge of town was a huge hexagonal shape which dwarfed everything in the area. Eager to discover more, I visited the local libraries but found that they had precious little information about the large and fearsome building which had stood there for the best part of a century. This web site, which began life at the start of , is the result of my researches and visits to hundreds of former workhouse sites across the British Isles, from Truro to Thurso, and from Dover to Donegal. At the last count, it contained over web pages, photos and illustrations, and maps and plans.
Up to A parliamentary report of recorded local workhouses in operation at Wortley for up to 35 inmates , Bradfield 60 , and Ecclesfield Note that the Wortley referred to on this page lies between Sheffield and Barnsley, and should not be confused with the district in Leeds of the same name. The Wortley workhouse was at Finkel Street to the south-west of the town in a row of cottages now known as Laundry Row.

The town covers all of the old village of Easthampstead though not all of the old parish and the hamlet of Ramslade. There is a Bronze Age round barrow at Bill Hill. Easthampstead Park was a favoured royal hunting lodge in Windsor Forest and Catherine of Aragon was banished there until her divorce was finalised. There has been a church there since Saxon times , although the present building dates from the mid 19th century, except for the lower portions of the Tudor tower.
The site was originally a village cum small town in the civil parish of Warfield in the Easthampstead Rural District. Very little of the original Bracknell is left. The location was preferred to White Waltham , which was also considered, because the Bracknell site avoided encroaching on good quality agricultural land. It also had the additional advantage of being on a railway line. The new town was planned for 25, people; it was intended to occupy over 1, hectares about 6 square miles of land in and around ‘Old Bracknell’ in the area now occupied by Priestwood, Easthampstead, Bullbrook and Harmans Water.
The existing town centre and industrial areas were to be retained with new industry brought in to provide jobs.

But now, there are homes with striking architectural flair available to those with more limited means thanks to the arrival of the self-build kit home. There is of course a “kit” element to even the most extraordinary self-built home. But these components are tailor-made to a specification laid down by the self-builder’s own architect, at a premium price, as part of the bespoke design of the property. The more bespoke the design, the more expensive, too.
Scandia Hus, for example, now has 3, of its homes in Britain, mostly in standard kit form. Designs range from conventional bungalows and chalets, family houses and self-built barn-style houses, and contemporary styles with cubist and New England influences. All show their green Scandinavian heritage — windows are triple-glazed, the homes have near-Arctic levels of insulation and air-tight construction which means heating costs are sharply less than many conventional homes.
While Potton, perhaps the best known British self-build kit home manufacturer, has Classic and Contemporary design ranges.

It will build homes for sale and rent, as well as retirement and student properties, many of which will be shipped from its new factory in Leeds. It said that using this method and building different types of homes, such as a mix of housing and flats, would reduce the time it would take to complete the development by five years.
Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, said in the Budget last week that the Government would use its purchasing power to drive the adoption of modern methods of construction, including building homes off-site in factories, in order to speed up delivery. This kind of construction is much more common in Continental Europe, particularly in Scandinavia, but has not recently been used at scale in this country. As well as homes, the site, in the village of Arborfield, has outline planning consent for a school, shops and offices.
More than a third of the development will be affordable housing. Its homes rely heavily on engineered timber, and will arrive on site almost complete, including painting and carpets.

Dr Nick Reed, a senior human factors researcher who led the project, found that those who use their smartphones on the move routinely spend up to 60 per cent of their time looking down at the device instead of focusing on the road ahead, compared with those without phones who spend just 10 per cent of the time, on average, looking away, for instance to check the speedometer, satnav or in-car entertainment. Police usually only report collisions where someone has been injured, and mobile phone users often slow down to compensate for their unsafe behaviour, which means their actions cause less severe crashes — leading to a lower level of reporting.
Where official statistics fail to illuminate this growing safety problem, the TRL study has, largely, shone a light. By electronically monitoring 28 young drivers aged 18 to 25 with an array of CCTV cameras inside the Honda Civic simulator, Dr Reed found that reaction times to visual and auditory stimuli — such as those experienced on a real-life journey — were nearly 38 per cent worse while they were using smartphones. Drivers who have seen cars inexplicably veer across the lanes of a motorway will not be surprised to hear that the 28 guinea pigs also swerved out of lane more frequently and reacted more slowly when vehicles ahead braked.
By contrast, there was a 37 per cent delay in reactions for those texting, 26 per cent for those making a hands-free call, 21 per cent for those on cannabis and 12 per cent for those at the UK alcohol drink-drive limit.

This makes it very easy to search all the batches for a particular geographic location using just the last name. Similar information is available from Steve Archer.
