Here’s Why Your Cakes Taste Like Sh*t

Tim Harford writes The Problem With Facts , which uses Brexit and Trump as jumping-off points to argue that people are mostly impervious to facts and resistant to logic: Facts, it seems, are toothless. Trying to refute a bold, memorable lie with a fiddly set of facts can often serve to reinforce the myth. Important truths are often stale and dull, and it is easy to manufacture new, more engaging claims. And giving people more facts can backfire, as those facts provoke a defensive reaction in someone who badly wants to stick to their existing world view. I think this is generally a good article and makes important points, but there are three issues I want to highlight as possibly pointing to a deeper pattern. Harford expects us to be impressed by this study. But how is this different from all of those social science facts to which he believes humans are mostly impervious? But given that the entire field is now in serious doubt, I feel like it would have been judicious to mention some of this in the article.

Specifically, Ehrman addresses individual books of the Bible which claim to have been written by one person and, in fact, were not. Examples are pseudepigrapha are many. There are dozens of these works, both for the Old Testament and the New. He claims that many of the New Testament books are pseudepigrapha. The leading contenders for this designation are 2 Peter and six of the letters attributed to Paul, including the pastoral epistles.

Reasons for suspecting these works are various and complex. However, according to Ehrman, the presence of these works in the Bible demonstrates conclusively that the Bible is full of lies. After all, is it not a lie to write something, and then claim that it was written by someone else? What if I wrote this blog post, but under the author designation, said it was written by Bart Ehrman? It would be deceptive and discrediting. It would be more than an error; it would be a lie.

In modern parlance, that is a lie, and a book written by someone who lies about his identity is a forgery.

All were from women who, like me, had suffered the agony of failed fertility treatment. They were reaching out to share their stories and to thank me for sharing mine. This is my story, as told to Sam Brick: We were raring to fill it with our family, but looking back, it was a mad thing to do. But I was still sure it was going to happen. I vividly remember the hope I felt knowing I was due to take a pregnancy test on our sixth wedding anniversary — followed by utter heartbreak when my period arrived.

We were both gutted, especially as we had run out of NHS funding. Neither of us felt strong enough to continue — it was just too hard. Liam and I had always been a laid-back, party-loving couple, but by that point we were arguing over everything. Our lives had effectively been put on hold for two years as we desperately fought to have a family and now it was all for nothing.

This is indeed a very sad day for us all. As an educator, my heart aches and I am sick to my stomach. Here again we have someone who has never set foot in a classroom and they are responsible for education. Teachers do not need someone who has not taught to tell them how to teach.

SimmiSimons via Getty Images In the dating world, gauging potential partners’ interest can be a fraught experience. A touch of the arm, an enthusiastic laugh or an extra second of eye contact can so easily be misinterpreted. But a new study suggests that, for straight people, there’s a general pattern to these communication gaps: Men are more likely to perceive women’s friendliness as sexual interest, while women tend to misread men’s efforts to land hookups as attempts to be friends.

To find this out, researchers out of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology surveyed students women and men between 18 and 30 about their experiences with sexual misperception. After going through the results, the researchers found a pattern that might sound familiar to many young singles even if there are plenty of exceptions. More women reported being subject to sexual"over-perception” than"under-perception” in the last year.

They were the ones sending out friend vibes to men they interacted with, but getting sexual advances in response.

The only problem is that you recently found out that throughout your whole relationship your partner has been on dating websites, swiping here, liking there, favoriting here, and emailing here and there with other people of the opposite sex. This is a very tough predicament for both people in the relationship. The fact of the matter is that the reason is irrelevant. When someone is in an exclusive relationship, it goes without saying that being in an online dating website or app is wrong, and inappropriate.

Having a dating site profile online and being active on it is beyond inappropriate and definitely a form of emotional cheating. If you need a confidence booster, then there are many other ways to go about it. I personally experienced something as such a while back, and I can honestly tell you that it was truly painful for me to think or assume that we were in an exclusive relationship, being that my partner at the time was on dating websites throughout the whole relationship.

Abstract Intimate intrusions in mobile dating contexts are a pressing social issue given the high uptake of dating apps and frequent anecdotal reports of abuse. Despite emerging popular and scholarly interest in gendered violence and online abuse, little is known to date about women’s everyday lived experiences of intimate intrusions facilitated through dating apps. In this review, I draw on three bodies of literature to demonstrate how sexual harassment, dating violence, and dating app research can help us better understand women’s experiences on Tinder and similar apps.

I then adapt the continuum of sexual violence as a framework to interrogate patterns of normalised abuse in this context. I argue that the theory of a continuum of sexual violence can help researchers to contextualise intimate intrusions on dating apps and consider their implications. It is important to pay attention to the normalisation of abuse in mobile dating contexts, particularly as a factor that may reinforce a culture that supports violence against women.
