Hi Solitaire In terms that I can understand – not being an electrician You are already aware that some European sites use two pin plugs rather than three – the third pin being an earth lead. Each English lead contains three wires – a live, a neutral and an earth – all of which must be located in their proper place in order to make the equipment work properly – and that is done by the shape of the plug – it will only fit into a socket in one particular way.

On a two pin site there is NO earth wire just a live and a neutral and that means that it is possible to fit the plug into the socket the ‘wrong’ way round – hence ‘Reverse Polarity’ – in theory it could mean that your appliances works backwards. Seriously – it actually means that the appliance could still be live even when it is switched off. Go to any caravan dealers where they have a spares shop and they will be able to supply a polarity tester and a specially wired cable which fits between your lead and the socket – and corrects the polarity to that which you need.

I spend over two months each year travelling around France inspecting sites for a campsite guide and I have NEVER found a site with a two pin connection and hence no earth. The standard French plug does have only two pins, one each for the live and neutral. However it does have a female socket to receive the earthing pin fitted to the socket.

Info A family-friendly spot, with loads of activities onsite and two quirky tree house options The long, tree-lined avenue that leads you into Camping Lez-Eaux is like a shaded runway landing you at your holiday destination. At its end you taxi into a maze of camping pitches dotted, like a busy terminal, with folk from all across Europe; Belgians in board shorts, Dutch in wide brimmed sun hats and French holidaymakers folding out their deck chairs. Over the years, the camping area has steadily grown and altered shape, gradually spreading itself beyond the charming stony building with its outlying fishing lake.

Despite a string of chalets and static caravan accommodation, the site still very much sticks to the traditional camping roots. Tents cover the vast majority of the grassy pitches, each with ample space and an electricity hook-up if you wish to use it, and classic vintage campervans pepper one or two of the sunny spots. The atmosphere is laid-back and family friendly, while activities in the peak of the summer period give you a pleasing time-out if the kids are still running wild. The real quirk of this campsite, however, is not in the age old essentials, like fresh croissants in the morning and a well-kept outdoor swimming pool, but in the newest additions that few other sites can match.

Six meters up, in a pair of old oaks on the edge of the grounds, two strikingly cool tree tents are the envy of every canvas camper. Inside, the tree trunk forms a centre column, around which everything is orientated, with a plush double bed and a single for kids.

Fish hook buyer’s guide Author: Frank Ross Early fishhooks were crafted from bone or sharp shells, and then, as metals were discovered and designs refined, the modern hook began its evolution into the multitude of offerings available today. Looking at huge racks and row upon row of fishhooks of all sizes and configurations, even seasoned anglers can be confused when it comes to selecting hooks. With so many fish, so many hooks and so little time, how do you pick the right hook for a specific technique?

Point variations While it would seem that a sharp point is a sharp point, there are many ways to cut, hone and shape a steel wire. Given a seemingly unlimited imagination and a penchant for innovation, hook manufacturers have developed a number of designs, each with its own positive aspects. Needle point This point is aptly named because of its appearance.

A close inspection will reveal that the sides of this point are round and evenly tapered.
